Environmental Protection Agency is going to register three new dicamba herbicides for use on cotton and soybeans that are genetically modified to tolerate weedkillers. Such herbicides were banned in 2020 and 2024 through two court orders due to dicamba is volatile and prone to drifting to harm non-targeted plants in the neighborhood.
The EPA is planning to put back three herbicides from BASF, Bayer Crop Science and Syngenta Crop Protections. The herbicide makers have not changed the formulation but put on more restrictions in terms of how and when the product should be used.
Environmental groups oppose to the new dicamba herbicides registration and says that the proposed restrictions are not enough.
