Purpose
Bromoethylbenzene is an important organic intermediate in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and liquid crystal industries. With the rapid development of the liquid crystal industry, its usage as a basic raw material is increasing day by day.

Synthetic method
Add 4000mL of diethylene glycol and 900g of potassium hydroxide to a 5000mL four necked flask equipped with a stirrer, thermometer, and reflux condenser. Stir and slowly raise the temperature to around 60 ℃. After the potassium hydroxide dissolves, add 754.7g of hydrated phenanthrene and 800g of p-bromoacetophenone in sequence. Slowly raise the temperature to reflux for 2 hours. Change reflux to distillation, add hot water dropwise to the reactants, and slowly evaporate until no oil droplets appear in the distillate, and stop the reaction. Transfer the distillate to a separating funnel, separate the aqueous phase, extract the aqueous phase with dichloroethane, combine the organic phases, wash with dilute hydrochloric acid until weakly acidic, then wash with saturated salt water three times, and dry. Filter, steam dichloroethane under normal pressure, and steam the product under reduced pressure.
